When is it time to re-engrave a rotogravure cylinder?
A gravure cylinder doesn't fail overnight—it gradually tells you it's reaching the end of its life. The key is recognizing the warning signs before they impact print quality, productivity, and customer satisfaction.
Here are some common indications that a cylinder may need to be re-engraved:
● Loss of print density despite correct ink viscosity, doctor blade pressure, and printing parameters.
● Reduced cell volume caused by wear, resulting in poor ink transfer and weak color strength.
● Fine details disappearing, especially in highlights, small text, and reverse printing.
● Inconsistent print quality, with mottling, uneven solids, or color variation that cannot be corrected through machine adjustments.
● Excessive doctor blade wear due to chrome deterioration or surface damage.
● Visible surface defects such as scratches, scoring, corrosion, chrome peeling, or polishing marks.
● Frequent color matching issues, requiring excessive ink formulation changes to achieve target density.
● Best practice: Don't rely only on visual inspection. Periodically measure cell volume and inspect the engraving under magnification. Comparing current cell volume with the original specification provides a reliable indication of cylinder wear and remaining service life.
